Noteworthy this week

  • Fed keeps rate unchanged
  • Socialism eradicates poverty… Not!
  • EU goes full socialism
  • We’ve never used more coal
  • Google ramps up emissions

Fed keeps rate unchanged: At the latest FOMC meeting on July 31, the Fed kept the federal funds rate unchanged at 5.25-5.50%.

Socialism eradicates poverty… Not!: Yes, it was one of those “not!” jokes. Socialism has always ended up in utmost poverty and misery for all; capitalism has helped get the vast majority out of poverty.

EU goes full socialism: The EU proposes to set up a centralized asset register, where citizens need to record all their assets and valuables. I guess a central bank digital currency isn’t enough.

We’ve never used more coal: Despite all the solar panels, all the windmills, the electric vehicles, and the government incentives to go green, the world has never used as much coal as it’s burning this year.

Google ramps up emissions: Google’s greenhouse gas emissions have increased 48% since 2019, driven by increasing energy demand from data centers like those used in running AI.
