Noteworthy this week

  • The great math behind Trump’s tariffs
  • The real reason behind the tariffs
  • Gold hits US$3,200
  • Russia and Australia have the largest gold reserves
  • Larry Fink shills Bitcoin

The great math behind Trump’s tariffs: For every country, they just took the US trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country’s exports to the US, or applied a minimum 10% tariff.

The real reason behind the tariffs: As Bill Ackman says, the tariffs are a negotiation tactic. However, the response is uncertain, and therefore, it’s a high-stakes game, which could lead to a trade war.

Gold hits US$3,200: With Trump’s tariff galore, uncertainty spread throughout global financial markets, and gold hit US$3,200/oz t for the first time in history.

Russia and Australia have the largest gold reserves: At 12,000 tons each, Russia and Australia have the largest gold reserves in the ground, followed by South Africa with 5,000 tons. Indonesia, Canada, China, and the US have around 3,000 tons of gold reserves.

Larry Fink shills Bitcoin: BlackRock’s Larry Fink said Bitcoin could threaten the US dollar’s reserve currency status. As Assness says, maybe not the most unbiased source.

The Secret of Our Success: How Culture Is Driving Human Evolution, Domesticating Our Species, and Making Us Smarter by Joseph Henrich

“Humans are a puzzling species. On the one hand, we struggle to survive on our own in the wild, often failing to overcome even basic challenges, like obtaining food, building shelters, or avoiding predators. On the other hand, human groups have produced ingenious technologies, sophisticated languages, and complex institutions that have permitted us to successfully expand into a vast range of diverse environments.”
